SANDERS CEMETERY
Lawrence County, Arkansas

Location: Richwoods

Introduction by Gina Horton: Sanders Cemetery, where people from Richwoods Community, located up above Walnut Ridge, about 7 miles from Portia are buried, actually lies just over the county line in Randolph County.

A descendant of several families living in the Richwoods Community in the 1880's - early 1900's walked this cemetery with 2 friends last summer (1998). They found only about 40 - 45 stones remaining with some grown over and some too dim to read. Some of the family names they found were Allison, Rippie, Dillport and Sexton. Many of the stones that used to be there are gone now according to residents who live by Richwoods Church.

To get to Sanders Cemetery, take the Pocahontas Highway (67N) out of Walnut Ridge, then turn left about 2 1/2 miles past the city limits. There will be a round stone silo on your right after you turn.

Go 2 miles to CR 405. Turn right, go to CR 400 and turn left. Drive until you see the church on your left. At the very next road (about 1 city block), turn right. Maybe 2 miles later, you will see a long lane on your left leading into the cemetery. Many people have had to be pulled out by tractors going to Sanders Cemetery. Be sure to go when the weather is dry and be prepared to bounce. A 4-wheel drive helps.

I have been including deaths listed in the Times Dispatch Newspaper from Walnut Ridge. In some cases the birth date was not given. In those cases I listed "no date" as a birth date. This does not mean that a birth is not included on their monument.
